According to Merriam-Webster, kindness is defined as the state of being sympathetic or helpful in nature. However, past the definition, kindness is a blessing. The Prophet (ﷺ) is the perfect example of a soul filled with nothing but compassion and love. The Quran describes the Prophet’s benevolent personality: "O Messenger of Allah! It is a great Mercy of God that you are gentle and kind towards them; for, had you been harsh and hard-hearted, they would all have broken away from you" (Quran 3:159). The Prophet (ﷺ) upheld the same loving attitude with any person he interacted with, whether they were an aggressive stranger or a subordinate. Rasulullah (ﷺ) demonstrated and proved that words of affection and respect have a stronger impact on any situation compared to using hostility to handle a conflict. The effects of kindness are endless, as it is necessary for the survival of humanity and cleansing the soul.
In our lives, we will have to deal with a variety of obstacles. Our career-driven mindsets blind us to the little mistakes we make daily. For instance, we fail to recognize the effects of our actions and how they potentially hurt others. Usually, we are so focused on correcting each other, we miss out on the opportunities to help one another grow. This is where kindness comes in because it is a quality so strong it helps form our identity, values, and morals. The path to an altruistic lifestyle starts by wishing peace and blessing upon others. However, the steps to becoming friendly must originate from the heart since a portion of being compassionate comes from demonstrating sincerity. In simpler terms, mean what you say and do! Our daily goals must include creating a welcoming environment for everyone we interact with by spending quality time with them in order to please Allah (SWT). Some examples of kindness include complimenting someone, telling your parents you love them, or giving an individual water on a hot day. You will immediately see the results of your kindness because the act is so simple, yet the outcomes are fruitful.
The goal of kindness is to help us realize the importance of prioritizing others’ happiness over our own. Nonetheless, kindness is so compelling that as you perform acts of compassion, your soul begins to purify and strengthen instantly. The mental frustrations of life slowly break down as you frequently smile, care for the elderly, donate to charities, and interact with someone having a bad day. A better world starts with you, so remember to treat others the way you want to be treated! May Allah (SWT) give us all the strength in our hearts to treat everyone with kindness despite how they may treat us. May Allah (SWT) guide us to stay on his path and to come back to every time we stray. Most importantly, may Allah (SWT) help us to be less egotistical so as to accept our mistakes and ask for forgiveness when we have made mistakes.
